When Carley arrived at the Murphys house she had one recollection of that night, that her mother hadn't tried to save her, and she didn't do her motherly duties. With this in Carley's mind she is so afraid of someone loving, yet the idea of loving someone else. As she acts out towards the Mrs. Murphy, something strange happens. Carley doesn't push Mrs. Murphy with her action she pulls her in. Carley is embarrassed of her past and is scared to think how everyone would treat her if they knew about her. Instead of telling her best friends, Toni Byars, of her past. She lies and tells her that the Murphys are her family. When Toni figures out the truth she is isn't angry about Carley's past, instead she's angry that Carley didn't feel like she could trust anyone with it. As their relationship grows stronger, Carley and Toni become closer than they ever could of imagined. Which made their goodbyes even harder for them, and everyone else to do. Carley, Toni, and the Murphys realized they were all in love with each other, they felt as if they were finally complete together.
